Now the internationally acclaimed ballerina Alina Cojocaru, whose years in London, first at the Royal Ballet and then English National Ballet, made her firm favourite with British ballet-lovers, has decided to adapt it for the stage through her own production company, Acworkroom Ltd. She enlisted the help of the Slovak choreographer Natália Horečná, who has created more than 40 works for companies such as Vienna State Ballet, La Scala Ballet, and Royal Danish Ballet.
Cojocaru herself will star in the role of Gelsomina, performed in the film by the deeply affecting Italian actress Giulietta Masina. With her elfin features and ability to portray intense vulnerability, Cojocaru would seem perfect for this role – it's not hard to see what attracted her to it.
Her husband and fellow dancer Johan Kobborg, formerly of the Royal Danish Ballet and the Royal Ballet, will take on the role of Il Matto, and Mick Zeni, former principal with La Scala Milan will dance Zampanó. They will be joined by an eight-strong ensemble.
The score for this two-act ballet is a collage of multi-award winning composer Nino Rota's best-known film music, and includes the ballet suite from the film La Strada, as well as soundtracks from Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and Il Casanova.
La Strada the ballet, which Cojocaru says has at its heart 'a touching, universal story of love and loss', has its world premiere at Sadler's Wells in January 2024.
