Having received a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival last year, Italian filmmaker Franceso Munzi's new film Black Souls looks to be a gripping new mafia thriller.

Adapted from a novel by Gioacchino Criaco, the film follows the story of three brothers (one of them played by Marco Leonardi, child actor in Cinema Paradiso) involved in the Calabrian mafia. We expect Black Souls to give a fresh interpretation of the classic theme of Italian family feuds, focusing on the ways in which several generations of the brothers’ family are caught up in this criminal underworld

If the film's atmospheric trailer and extremely positive critical reception are anything to go by, Black Souls should prove itself to be essential watching for fans of thrilling and suspenseful mafia drama.

The UK release for Black Souls is scheduled for 30 October
