Alan Rickman: director
Most people know Alan Rickman from his appearance in British classics: from the Harry Potter franchise to Richard Curtis' Love Actually or the BBC's classic film adaptation of Sense and Sensbility, he's a familiar face in British rom-coms and fluffy period dramas. Yet now Rickman's making his second foray into the world of film direction: whether his talents were better suited to playing misunderstood rogues remain to be seen, only time, and his new film A Little Chaos, will tell. The subject of the new Alan Rickman film? Versailles, Louis XIV, and a romance between a pair of landscape gardeners.
A Little Chaos: film cast
With the likes of Matthias Schoenaerts, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet: A Little Chaos boasts an all-star cast. Not your typical period drama, the film tells the story of landscape architect André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts) who is charged by King Louis XIV (Alan Rickman) to design the most opulent garden in history. As a result, Le Nôtre hires Madame Sabine de Barra (Kate Winslet) a chaotic gardener with unforeseen talents. As tensions arising from their artistic differences reach boiling point, the pair soon realise there's more blooming between them carefully pruned petunias.
Reviews for A Little Chaos
A Little Chaos reviews have been mixed, but anyone wishing to catch more of these two British cinema greats back on the silver screen (along with hunk of the moment, Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts) will no doubt make the trip. There's also a Q&A after the film with Rickman himself at the Curzon Mayfair: we'd get them soon, though, as tickets are booking up fast.
A Little Chaos: UK release date
The film will be released in UK cinemas on Friday 17 April. Head to Curzon Mayfair for an Alan Rickman Q&A following the 6.15pm screening.

  • What the critics say

    A Little Chaos review
    TELEGRAPH

'A heaving bouquet of a picture...Rickman and Deegan take their film perhaps a touch more seriously than we’re able to...Winslet’s charming, though, and her chemistry with Schoenaerts’s brooding hunk is so palpable you could cut it with secateurs.'

    Tim Robey

    GUARDIAN

'It has to be said, the performances are excellent. Winslet manages emotional honesty within anachronistic confines, and Schoenaerts escapes with dignity...There are some potentially interesting ideas voiced...but the answers are implicit and the debate dead on arrival.'
