Lady Gaga understands a Bad Romance like nobody else. So it seems fitting that the pop superstar will be reprising the lead role, previously made famous by Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand, in Bradley Cooper's remake of A Star Is Born.

"I'm elated to be directed by and starring with Bradley in this project," Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, tweeted this morning. "He's a brilliant visionary artist."

Gaga is famous for her career as a singer-songwriter, which has earned her 200 awards, including an Oscar. She has appeared in two films previously: Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, though this will be her first lead role in a feature.

A Star Is Born is also a first for Bradley Cooper, who is making his directing debut. Clint Eastwood was originally tipped to direct, but rumour has it that that version hit the buffers following Beyoncé's withdrawal after her fees couldn't be met.

The film tells the tale of an aspiring starlet and her troubled relationship with a leading man whose star is starting to fade. Lady Gaga is expected to compose and perform brand new songs in the film.
