First it was Sotheby's S-2, now Christie's Mayfair: all the auction houses seems to be doing it. By opening new gallery spaces, and publicly exhibiting pre-auction pieces, the art market giants expand their client base. The auctioneers soften the blow of the Big Bad Price Tag by showing art in its natural habitat. Money (almost) doesn't come into it. It's great business idea- and we're all for it, it means more art for public consumption. Opened in October 2013, the pieces at this Bond Street Gallery are mostly on loan from artists and private collectors, and 25 per cent are for sale. Go for a wander round, even if your cheque book stays firmly in your pocket.
