This theatre, built in 1884, has a history of edgy productions thanks to the director Joan Littlewood, who in 1953 made it the home of her Theatre Workshop company. In 2005, it made history by having the first British Black musical, The Harder They Come, transfer to the West End. At the turn of the Millennium, the Grade II listed building had a major refurbishment thanks to Lottery funding.
