Frank Bowling is a name that we rarely hear in Europe, but in the trailblazing painter is a key figure in modernism and highly regarded in the US. With shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and Serpentine Gallery, London, and even an OBE from the Queen under his belt, it's high time Londoners get to grips with this radical artist's work.
Frank Bowling art & career
Born in Guyana, South America, Bowling headed to London to study at the Royal College of Art and joined the ranks of celebrated British Pop artists in the 1950s. As the swinging '60s hit, Bowling moved to New York where he embraced the vibrant abstraction movement of and laid to rest any remnants of his Pop influences to rest.
Frank Bowling Poured Paintings
The Hales Gallery Frank Bowling exhibition focuses on the celebrated Poured Paintings which really made his name. Using a special mechanical apparatus that he developed, Bowling tilted the canvas to spontaneously blend colours. Electric tones bleed across these works, without context or narrative, but pure aesthetic originality.
If you're looking for things to do in east London, we recommend these abstract wonders of vivid colour by Frank Bowling.
