Argentinian artist Varda Caivano has fans in high places. Not only was she featured at the Venice Biennale last year, Turner Prize winner Chris Ofili (best known for slapping elephant dung on to his paintings to add texture) has been shouting about her work for years and even introduced her to the gallerist Victoria Miro. Now the painter is back at the Mayfair branch of this powerful international gallery for her third solo exhibition, focused on themes of continuity, evolution and departure.

Prepare for a wave of gestural paintings, which are filled with emotional and material resonance, to catch your eye as you step into Victoria Miro. Caivano toys with a fluid style that is not quite abstract or representational, but leaves loose brush marks to be interpreted by the viewer. Washes of colour and unpainted canvas pepper these changing works, which are erased and remade several times over.
Carefully considered and hypnotic works, this contemporary painter has a bright future ahead.

  • The Araki

The first Japanese restaurant in Britain to be awarded three Michelin stars, The Araki has a simple premise: one menu, eleven courses, all sushi. This is seriously high-end, gourmet stuff and you won't experience anything else like it. The restaurant itself is breathtaking with Edo period-inspired décor and a counter made from a two hundred year-old Japanese cypress.
