Contemporary British artist Hew Locke crafts an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, London based around a naval theme. Incorporating both new and existing artworks, this Imperial War Museum art exhibition features a painted photograph of the HMS Belfast and a large wall drawing created especially for the space.

Also don't miss Hew Locke's major transformation of an entire deck of the HMS Belfast called The Tourists (26th March - 7th September) into an imaginary journey to the Trinidad Carnival in 1962, with the crew crafting unsettling masks and tattoos in their anxiety for the crossing. The ghostly abandoned Second World War battleship, adorned with rambunctious carnival costumes, is unnerving in its collision of racial stereotypes and sinister HMS Belfast historical mannequins.
Who is Hew Locke? Art and biography
Locke grew up in Guyana during its last years as a British colony and as a result much of his work explores Britain’s naval history. You might recognise him from the Hew Locke Tate Modern indoor carnival last year.
Hew Locke London exhibition
For centuries naval power was a vital aspect of the British Empire. As an island nation a hold over the high seas was essential, not only in military terms but also for trade and cultural exchange. Control over primary sea routes forged a hierarchy of power for the imperial era and continues to define relationships between countries across the globe today.
Imperial War Museum contemporary art
Alongside the historical Imperial War exhibitions 2015, don’t miss this venture into contemporary art at the London museum by Hew Locke as he investigates the impact of naval power.
