A fan of 90s alternative hip-hop? James Lavell’s record label Mo’Wax is celebrating its 21st anniversary by hosting an exhibition of rare art works, proofs and merchandise from the Urban Archaeology Archive at the Saatchi Art Gallery, London.
You might know Mo’Wax (taken from the title of James Lavell’s column in the magazine Straight Up No Chaser and club night, Mo’Wax Please) for its collaborations with iconic urban artists like Futura and musical creations by big 90s names such as DJ Shadow, Tommy Guerrero, Attica Blues, UNKLE and Blackalicious.
This latest exhibition at Saatchi’s King’s Road address, Build & Destroy,
reveals the prolific creations of an innovative community centred on the Mo’Wax label. Highlights include the Build & Destroy scent by award-winning perfume designer, Azzi Glasser; the internationally regarded street artist and one of the founders of Massive Attack , Robert Del Naja; and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s contemporary Futura, the graffiti artist that is best known for his album covers for The Clash. There is also a fantastic array of merchandise by brands like Nike and Converse and original artworks to discover, and the best part is - they’re all for sale.
And while you’re in Chelsea, don’t miss the Saatchi Art Gallery’s new major exhibition of international Pop Art.
