This winter, Tower Bridge Exhibition will host its first major photography showcase, beginning with Parr's legendary work. It promises to highlight the ways in which ancient and modern traditions come together inside the ancient city, often with a humorous edge.
Parr has been photographer in residence to the City of London since 2013, and has privileged access to many restricted ceremonies and traditions, such as Beating the Bounds at All Hallows by the Tower. The exhibition should therefore prove an intriguing look into the events which take place behind closed doors.
This unique insight into the City will allow visitors to become acquainted with the annual Pancake Race and the Gloves Ceremony, longstanding traditions which many of us might not have heard of, and will dispel myths about the city, whilst demonstrating the traditions which are still very much kept alive by those who live and work behind the walls.
The legendary bridge created by Sir John Barry and Sir Horace Jones in 1894 will display Swans, Gloves, Roses and Pancakes in the grand Victorian Engine Rooms.
