The gilded, immense and painstakingly colour-blocked paintings of Suzan Frecon come to David Zwirner Gallery in Mayfair this summer.

The artist, whose achievement has remained under-acknowledged for decades, is given the sweep of the gallery’s Upper Room to display her paintings, many of which are several metres high.

Frecon’s practice is both innovative and labour-intensive. Her pieces often comprise individually shaped hand-painted and gilded wooden slabs. The precise vibrantly coloured geometric shapes impeded in her works recall stained glass and medieval illuminations; they are created in her own hand-made encaustic (or pigmented wax).

Frecon’s may be a small show, but the scale and visual intensity of her paintings make this a big event.

We particularly recommend sitting outside on the heated terrace for a truly atmospheric dining experience.
