What if the Russians had been the first to land on the moon? What if the Space Race was still a thing? In the new Apple TV+ miniseries For All Mankind, penned by Battlestar Galactica writer Ronald D Moore, this is the reality. The competition to fly men to the moon remains the prevailing American dream, and dominates scientific research and US politics… and the Russians beat them to it.

In the trailer, we’re greeted by angry Americans watching live coverage of the moon landing on television. Why the long faces? Well, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are nowhere to be seen on the moon's surface – no American footprints, no 'small step for [a] man'. Instead, it’s the Soviets who take the giant leap for mankind.

The ‘Red Moon’ is a lost cause; that is, until Nasa realises there’s still a war to be won.

Trying to beat the Soviets, Nasa introduces the world's first female astronauts

Through the series, US astronauts and politicians try to keep up with the Soviet game-changers. One of Nasa's innovations is an all-female astronaut crew, many years before American women actually went into space.

The series features Joel Kinnaman (Hanna) as esteemed astronaut Edward Baldwin, as well as Michael Dorman (Patriot, Wonderland) and Sarah Jones (Damnation) playing Gordo and Tracy Stevens, a couple at Nasa.

A sci-fi series with an gripping historical twist, For All Mankind supplements Apple TV+’s varied offerings coming out in November.

For All Mankind is available on Apple TV+ from Friday 1 November
