Where to unleash your anger over Brexit in London

By Holly O'Mahony on 22/3/2019

Will we leave? Won’t we leave? And if we must, when will we actually go? Ever since the UK voted in favour of leaving the EU in June 2016, we, the people, have been kept largely in the dark and out of plans as to how and when we’ll do it. The uncertainty is taking its toll; a recent report by the Mental Health Foundation found four in 10 of us feel powerless, while 39% are angry.

We’re sick of hearing about it on the news and sick of worrying what it will mean for the future of the UK – and the citizens who currently reside here. We’re so damn sick of thinking about Brexit that for many of us, no amount of yoga, guided meditation or other ‘zen’ practices will cut it. What we really need is somewhere to let out our anger. Thankfully, London is well-equipped with places to do just that. From the all-new Brexit Rage Room to the podcast that invites listeners to call up and vent their frustrations on air, here’s where to release your anger over Brexit.

The Brexit Rage Room

The Brexit Rage Room

If the conversation in your workplace kitchen has been about little other than Brexit recently, a session in the Brexit Rage Room could be just the team-building exercise you need. Created by London-based company Team Tactics, the Brexit Rage Room is specifically aimed at companies looking to give their employees a place to air any tensions or frustrations surrounding our departure from the European Union, and the way in which the government is handling it.

Here, armed with an array of blunt tools (baseball bats, crowbars, spray paint canisters – you name it) you’ll have the chance to smash up Brexit-related objects – from the Brexit bus to piñatas of Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson – all in a safe, controlled space. It’s not all mindless smashing though; each session begins with a short debate in which attendees are encouraged to discuss their views on Brexit, and ends with a half-hour meditation session. You'll want to register your team soon, though, the Brexit Rage Room is currently only scheduled to run for a week.

Axe Throwing

Axe Throwing

Forget mindfulness and meditation. When it comes to Brexit, sometimes the best (and only) way to purge those pent-up feelings of fury is to throw something very, very hard. Rather than making this object the briefcase of the next person who treads on your toes on the tube, make it an axe at Whistlepunk’s bespoke axe-throwing centre. While the essence of the practice might be rooted in violence, axe throwing in a controlled environment has been commended for the tranquility it lends the thrower. Over the course of an hour-and-a-half session, you’ll be taught the techniques to throw like a pro, then let loose in teams to take shots at a target. To give the experience a Brexit edge, just imagine that at the centre of the bullseye is whatever – or whoever – annoys you most about the current political situation.

Kobox

Kobox

If the Brexit kerfuffle leaves you feeling like you could physically punch those in charge, but the thought of bringing down a hammer on their piñata-shaped namesake is a little too voyeuristic for you, why not take your anger out on a punchbag instead? Better still, why not take your anger out on a punchbag in a trendy, club-like setting, surrounded by fluorescent strobe lighting with rave tunes throbbing in the background? Whether you’re boxing with a team or on your own, Kobox offers exactly this experience. You don’t need prior practice to take part in one of their classes – you’re taught the moves before you begin punching. Who knows? You might even leave the 50-minute, high intensity class feeling a tiny bit thankful to Brexit for giving you the motivation to take up a martial art.

For a Bad Time, Call

For a Bad Time, Call

Let’s be honest, we’re all tired of listening to the Brexit humdrum on Radio 4’s Today Programme. Rather than muttering (or shouting) your responses to the tedious political spiels into thin air, call into the podcast that gives a voice to its angry (female) listeners. Named ‘For a Bad Time, Call’ this innovative podcast hosted by Anne Jaconette and Clare Roth provides a platform for women to out their frustrations on all manner of perceived injustices – and Brexit is no exception. To have your complaints heard, all you have to do is call the hotline on: 669-BAD-TIME and leave a voicemail outing your rage. This will then be transmitted in an unadulterated mini-broadcast, aired to fellow listeners. Hear, Hear!

Sing it out at Lucky Voice (or a karaoke bar of your choice)

Sing it out at Lucky Voice (or a karaoke bar of your choice)

In 2015, a study by the University of Queensland, Australia found that listening to heavy metal could quell the rage of angry listeners. In light of this, why not take the practice one step further – not only listening to loud, angry songs but belting out the lyrics to them, too?

With locations in Holborne, Soho and Islington, Lucky Voice karaoke bars are an accessible place to do this. Book your room, grab your fellow Brexit-despairing pals, and programme a line-up of your favourite heavy metal, rock and angry emo hits.

Wreck Room

Wreck Room

If you miss out on one of the few available slots at the Brexit Rage Room, fear not: the Wreck Room in Peckham offers a similar experience, just with breakable goods that aren’t specific to Brexit. Those who harbour even an inch of pity for Mrs May and her cronies might even prefer this more generalistic rage-abating experience, while those who really would relish the opportunity to take out their Brexit rage on its orchestrators will just have to use their imagination.

All you have to do is pick your music (heavy metal recommended), your weapon (hammers and clubs are both obvious choices) and start smashing everything from typewriters to china pots. Boiler suits, gloves and protective helmets are provided, so your team will remain unharmed while you metaphorically trample over Brexit.
