Carl Turner Architects and Make Shift, the team behind Pop Brixton (another space supporting small businesses), proposed the restructure in 2015 when the Southwark Council asked the community for ideas about what to do with the underused multi-storey car park. This isn't the first time the venue has been an artistic base camp, having previously served as the scenic backdrop to a BBC Prom.
The first four floors of Peckham Levels are privately rented by local artists, whose talents range from violinmaking to 3-D printing. The workshops allow jewellers (like Ella Bull), designers (like Playdate), writers (like the staff of gal-dem), and producers (like Brother Film Co.) to focus on their craft in a communal setting.
Levels five and six of the re-imagined car park, in contrast, will be open to the public on a regular basis. The 'shared space' is available for community events. Visitors can take a yoga class or get a blow dry overlooking the panoramic views of Peckham from Cahoona's Hair Hub before feasting on the scrumptious street food available at this bustling hub of talent.
The choice of food and drink at Peckham Levels is wholly enticing. Opening for breakfast, brunch and lunch, WILDFLOWER is an all day vegetarian cafe and canteen from the team at Parched London. Chef Joseph Ryan, formerly of summer rooftop favourite Frank's Bar will be serving up vegetarian and vegan food in a relaxed, communal atmosphere. Pickywops is a vegan pizzeria with superfood and healthy bases. Near and Far by the team behind The Magic Roundabout will be serving up inventive and healthy cocktails. Lords of Poké are, unsurprisingly, serving Californian style poke bowls. Drum & Flats specialise in Caribbean chicken wings, WEST bring a little corner of California to Peckham Levels with an all-day natural wine bar and 'conscious' sustainable kitchen. Ensuring a truly eclectic mix of cuisines, other notable offerings include Camberwell’s Kurdish restaurant Nandine, Chinese street food from Hao Hao Chi and classic french cuisine served in a street food style from Canard.
