Five Arthur Miller plays in London for 2019

The great American playwright Arthur Miller is no stranger to London's stages. His dramas of families living and struggling against the backdrop of a changing American society, past or present, remain relatable through the decades and across the Atlantic.

Though Miller was writing in the 50s and 60s, capturing the unease of modern America, his work is having a distinct moment right now in London. 2019 heralds five different Miller productions from The Crucible to All My Sons to the late, lesser-known The American Clock.

The revivals look to be as ambitious as the plays themselves, with new approaches including an all-black cast at the Young Vic to a gender-bent The Crucible at The Yard.

Here's how London theatres are re-imagining Arthur Miller's plays.

The Crucible, The Yard Theatre

Arthur Miller's 1953 classic The Crucible is much revived and endlessly reinterpreted, most recently by Ben Whishaw on Broadway. The Yard Theatre seem to be aiming for a radical contemporary take, with a gender-swapped lead that is sure to throw a whole new light on the play.
