As the importance of technology skyrocketed in the last decade, so did the potential for ‘cyber attacks’ to inflict serious damage on nations, companies, or individuals. The more reliant we become on computers and the internet, the more vulnerable we are to hackers, and the field is only becoming more complex.

It is concern about this threat, and what the consequences of failing to deal with it could be, that drives this panel discussion. In the talk, organised by Intelligence Squared, panel members will consider how tensions could play out. Will people use traditional military tactics to confront the cyber threat, or will warfare take on an entirely new face?

Three experts in the field make up the panel – James Clapper, President Obama’s former Director of National Intelligence and the man who was forced to handle the Edward Snowden leaks and last year’s hack of the Democratic Party; Sadie Creese, Professor of Cyber Security at the University of Oxford and head of the Global Cyber Security Capacity Centre; and Robert Hannigan, a former director of Government Communications Headquarters and one of the creators of the National Cyber Security Centre within GCHQ.

The world of warfare is transforming rapidly, and to hear about how this new and complicated world is being navigated by the experts, and have the opportunity to ask your own questions, head over to the Emmanuel Centre on 23 October.
