The cheerful widow of the title is Hanna, who finds herself wealthy and single. Confident that she will land attractive Danilo, she reckons without his male pride...
This frothy comedy has all the bubbles of the copious amounts of champagne consumed by its leading characters, and director Max Webster promises plenty of references relevant to today's women.
Sarah Tynan plays the vivacious Hanna, with Nathan Gunn as Danilo and Robert Murray as Camille and ENO's great comedian Andrew Shore, last seen in the hilarious Iolanthe, as pompous Baron Zeta.
Estonian conductor Kristiina Poska makes her ENO debut directing the orchestra and chorus of English National Opera in a season which has brought more women conductors to the fore.
