Into The Woods started life as a Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim and James  Lapine. Bringing together characters and stories from Grimm’s Fairy Tales with an original narrative about a baker and his wife lifting a witch’s curse, the show is a modern revival of an age-old storytelling tradition. Under the directorial eye of Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of A Geisha), the show has now been adapted for the silver screen.
Rob Marshall’s Into The Woods assembles an all-star cast: Emily Blunt and James Corden play the central couple, while Meryl Streep appears as a witch, Johnny Depp as a wolf, and Anna Kendrick as Cinderella. The show has already garnered considerable attention, and has been nominated for three Golden Globes. It airs in UK cinemas from 9th of January 2015, and is expected to be a family-friendly hit for the New Year.

Due to the original musical's adult themes and dark content, Disney have had several scenes omitted or revised, including a re-written subplot involving Rapunzel, and several deaths having been moved off-screen.

    INTO THE WOODS: ⭑⭑⭑⭒⭒

Though it might have worked for some audiences, we found Into The Woods a disappointingly incoherent adaptation of the Broadway hit. Fans of Sondheim, or musicals in general might have been charmed, and the stellar cast will certainly draw wide audiences, but the confused moralising message of the film meant it fell a little flat. What could have been a refreshingly dark, Dahl-esque take on the Grimm tales was sadly missing under the cloying Disney sentiment, and the songs lacked colour, with the exception of the comically naff duet from Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen, but which failed to redeem it. Into The Woods is certainly not everyone's cup of tea.
