Jabberwocky, Little Angel Theatre

29 Nov 14 – 01 Feb 15, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Beware the Jabberwock: Lewis Carroll's mythical beast is brought to life in a magical musical world of marionettes and morals hidden in the nonsense.

By Lucy Brooks on 7/8/2014

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch"

Lewis Carroll's joyous nonsense world of the jubjub bird and the tumtum tree is a favourite of readers of all ages thanks to the seductive sounds that slip from the tongue and fizz into life. Now the vibrant poem and its fantastical and ferocious creatures are woven into a narrative in this exuberant family puppet show.

Our hero Milo is forced to stay inside his overprotective parents, who are paranoid about the dangerous creatures lurking in the outside world. When Milo finally makes a break for freedom he discovers that while there is indeed much to make him quake with fear -- the fuminous Bandersnatch, the Jabberwock himself -- there's also a wondrous world to make him yell 'callooh, callay'. The bright puppet cast have wild eyes and flickery shadows, as these stunningly crafted marionettes inspire fear, wonder and delight.

The show enchanted critics and children when it premiered in 2004. This a welcome return to Little Angel and a chance for those too young to experience the production last time.

Recommended for ages six and up (under fives will not be permitted).

  • What the critics say

    THE OBSERVER

"Once again the Little Angel theatre makes the miniature spellbinding... uncanny and enchanting. Oh, and comic too."

    Susannah Clapp

    THE STAGE

"the show is less concerned with narrative than with how it feels to be at the mercy of imagination. This is a lavish production, literally full of shooting stars and conceived on a note of euphoria."

    Helena Thompson

    THE GUARDIAN

“this is one of those great children's shows that work largely in the realm of the unconscious and which has a visual imagination that is extravagant and Quixotic. Peter O'Rouke's forest design is a marvel of angular beauty and the puppets are a wonderful mix of the utilitarian and the fantastical as they conjure the strange creatures lurking in the forest.”

    ABOUT LITTLE ANGEL THEATRE

For over 50 years the Little Angel Theatre has shown that the diverse and engaging art of puppetry is much more than a seaside ‘Punch and Judy’ show. Their innovative productions have toured around the globe and are renowned for a focus on imagination and artistic quality.

  • Ottolenghi, Islington

Supper fare at Ottolenghi includes the likes of pan-fried octopus and slow-roasted Cabrito goat, with a wide range of vegetarian options inspired by the flavours of the Mediterranean and Near East. They don't take bookings, though, so we recommend getting in early.
