Somerset House’s open-air Summer Series is London at its very best. For two weeks every year, the crisp Georgian gates of this neoclassical landmark open up for music’s brightest stars and 3000 of their fans. The beautiful courtyard, the teary-eyed atmosphere, the heady line-up: these evenings are the perfect way to experience live music.
Nick Mulvey Somerset House
Everyone's a bit in love with Nick Mulvey, who takes to the stage on July 14. He made his name as one fourth of the hotly-tipped jazz experimenters Portico Quartet. During his time with the band, Mulvey played the hang, an bowl-like instrument similar in tone to the steel drum.
In 2011, however, he hung up the hang in order to pursue a solo career. Since then, he’s released two EPs whose delicate acoustic songs were warmly received by critics. But it is his début album, the much-praised First Mind, which ensured his real breakthrough.
Debut Album, First Mind
First Mind is full of melody and tenderness, but it's no pushover. Mulvey's a serious musician, and this record is a five star affair. He studied Ethnomusicology at SOAS, and world music textures lend spice and zest to First Mind. Irregular rhythms, hip-hop intricacies form the backbone, but he can spin as good a polysyllabic yarn as Paul Simon, and finger-pick like Nick Drake. These are big, gentle, mystical songs. Album standout Cucurucu is warm and yearning, which quotes DH Lawrence and weeps "like a child for the past".
Of all the Somerset House Summer Series concerts, Mulvey's will be by far and away the most interesting. Don't miss the chance to see this remarkable talent live.
