Surely an experience not to be missed this summer, The Luna Cinema does precisely what it says on the tin, and sets up its screen under moonlight in a variety of stunning locations, from May to September. As the weather turns a corner, we think it’s about time to make some plans to enjoy the milder temperatures, and open air cinema sounds like just the ticket.
What is The Luna Cinema?
The Luna Cinema, one of the UK’s biggest curators of outdoor film experiences, has just released its nationwide summer programme, which involves 120 screenings across the country. Each location has been carefully selected to act as a fitting backdrop to the films on show, and here in London we are particularly spoilt for choice.

The programme is a mix of old school crowd-pleasers (think Back to the Future, Casablance, Dirty Dancing) and recent blockbusters such as The Theory of Everything and The Grand Budapest Hotel: overall, the selections are decidedly feel-good.
Highlights from the programme also include screenings on the top of One New Change, such as In Bruges and Groundhog Day. These choices seem particularly tongue-in-cheek; both films feature people flinging themselves off high buildings, which will undoubtedly increase the vertiginous experience of a rooftop viewing.
Where to watch outdoor movies in London
For those less inclined to heights, Notting Hill in the sumptuous grounds of Kensington Palace, just a stone’s throw away from the film’s eponymous neighbourhood, may be more appealing. In truth, there are too many great offerings from this year’s Luna Cinema to list here; we recommend you flick through the programme in its entirety, if you have a moment.
Some of the events will be preceded with the option of a three course dinner, but if you like your cinema food a little more casual, there is hot food and a full bar at every location. Food options vary from screening to screening, but Luna Cinema are promising some tantalizing catering, from street-style barbecue to fresh, wood-fired pizza and ‘gourmet nachos’ (which will have to be seen to be believed). Alternatively, you can pack up a picnic basket and settle down with your own homemade feast under the stars.
