A former ballet dancer, Whitley is now hot property in the world of contemporary dance.
The Royal Ballet School graduate began his career at Birmingham Royal Ballet. He later performed with companies including Rambert, Michael Clark Company and Wayne McGregor Random Dance.
As a dance-maker, Whitley shares McGregor’s intellectual approach to movement.
By exploring the meaning and value of dance in relation to media such as science and digital technology, Whitley intends to offer audiences an alternative – artistic – way of engaging with scientific ideas.
With 8 Minutes, he invites dance fans to share in the sense of wonder that pushes scientists to investigate, analyse and discover.
'There are few things that ignite our imaginations quite as much as space exploration,' says Whitley, 'confronting us with spectacular forces, enormous scales and all the time reshaping how we understand ourselves and our place in the universe.
'I’m extremely excited to be immersing myself in this awe-inspiring subject to create a compelling piece of dance.'
Set to a score by electro-acoustic music innovator Daniel Wohl, 8 Minutes features an installation of high-definition imagery from BAFTA Award-winning visual artist Tal Rosner.
Whitley’s work to date has sold quickly. If your interest has been piqued, do what all good scientists do and follow your curiosity – all the way to the box office.
