English Touring Opera, in a unique performance of this work at Temple Church (18 Oct), will draw on all its dramatic skills to re-create the last hours of the life of Christ, singing from memory and from the heart.
The narration by the Evangelist, usually sung by a single artist, will on this occasion by shared around the singers who take turns to tell the story. Those remarkable singers include Katie Bray, counter-tenor William Towers and bass-baritone Andrew Slater, who all appear also in the stylish Radamisto at Hackney Empire (16 Oct).
The chorales, which comment on the action, have been newly translated from German into English by a number of academics and musicians, including the Rev Lucy Winkett, go-ahead rector of St James's, Piccadilly, former BBC Proms director Roger Wright, and mathematician Marcus du Sautoy.
Tickets for the St Matthew Passion always sell out quickly, such is the work's endless appeal to music-lovers, and this promises to be an exceptionally gripping reading of the work. Best book now.
Bach's 'St Matthew Passion' is sung in German, with chorales in English.
