27 Aug: The week's best BBC Proms
Bach, Verdi, Stravinsky ... and a Gilbert and Sullivan satire on the law
The score by Igor Stravinsky (pictured) for the radical ballet The Rite of Spring outraged audiences at the first performance in 1913. Today it is one of the most popular pieces in the concert programme, savage, beguiling and shot through with exciting rhythms. The BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Semon Bychkov perform this landmark with two other 20th-century classics, Ravel's enchanting La Valse and Berio's colourful Sinfonia.
