To celebrate the Mexican festival Day of the Dead, UK restaurant chain Wahaca brought the best of Mexico to London, with an afternoon and evening of revelry at Tobacco Wharf London last weekend.
This eclectic fiesta offered a profound, multi-sensory exploration of Mexican culture through food, music, film and street art. We particuarly enjoyed the musical bingo and rousing performances from the mariachi band - who roused attendees hanging out in La Casa Loca with a fiery rendition of La Cucaracha. Other highlights included the Mexican wrestling and ghoulish face painters who transformed guests into a truly spooky bunch.
Foodies were treated to a stunning array of market stalls, which served up all the spice and sass of Mexican cuisine till late. Piquant flavours abounded in the vendors’ tacos, tortas and churros. Mugs of velvety hot chocolate, sharp tequila shots and specially brewed beer by Brixton brewery was on hand to complement these gastronomic delights. There was also a bustling market downstairs selling brightly coloured homewares. We found ourselves lusting over the stand-out cushions which provided colorful contrast to the initially awful weather outside. The Day of the Dead partnership with Saatchi Gallery meant there was also some stimulating contemporary art on show.
As the day went on, the festival showcased some killer live performances from home-grown and Latin American talents alike. Rock band Savages hit up the Mextronica stage, along with Mad Decent’s Toy Selectah and Mexican super group Mexrrissey, who added a Latino kick to Morrissey classics.
Culture Whisper was lucky enough to have a Samsung Galaxy to play with for the day and we made the most of the crystal clear camera, the perfect way to capture the flamboyant costumes and vibrant sights throughout the festival (we confess, we also made ample use of the beautify option on selfie mode...). Slick and easy-to-use, by the end of the day we were questioning whether our jump to iPhone had been premature. A must try in the run up to Christmas.
