Beloved British actress and director Kathy Burke is returning to her Catholic school roots in her revamping of Mary O’Malley’s blistering comedy, Once A Catholic . With her stellar background in comedy and experience of convent school education, her direction is sure to make the most of this funny and heart-warming script.
When the play first premiered at the Royal Court in 1977, O’Malley became the resident theatre dramatist, demonstrating Once A Catholic’s strength as a production and her gift as a playwright. Set in 1957, as the swinging sixties approach, it follows the sexual awakening of three schoolgirls (Mary, Mary and Mary) in North West London, each woefully ill-equipped to deal with sexual freedom because of the imposing rules and guilt drummed into them by the nuns that run their school, the Convent of Our Lady Fatima.
Burke is well known for her film work in Kevin and Perry Go Large and in the sitcom Gimme Gimme Gimme, as well as her appearances on TV's French and Saunders, Absolutely Famous and Harry Enfield and Chums. She has been nominated for six BAFTA awards, and since 2001 has concentrated on directing.
If you are a Catholic - practicing or lapsed – or attended a Catholic school, this play will speak to you. If not, this play will speak to you. With Burke at the helm of this timeless coming-of-age story, we expect it to be a wonderful production - for all the good girls and bad boys in London. It is selling out fast, so book now.
